Rhode Island Family Photos | Why I Love Outdoor Family Photos
OCTOBER 20, 2023
I’ve known Amanda and her family for years. Not only did she train me on how to be a product photographer, but we’ve both helped each other out with second shooting. Their family moved to Florida recently, but they come back up to New England often to see family and so Amanda can see clients. When they’re here, we take advantage so they can get some Rhode Island family photos!
When I was young, my mum was always encouraging me to “go outside and play.” So outside I went. Everyday if I could. The sun is shining, birds are chirping, bugs are crawling. Light summer breeze. Smell of flowers and dirt. Sound of the lemonade truck. Getting dirt in my fingernails. I actually preferred it. Imagination comes to life right?
This is why my Rhode Island family photos sessions are on location and outdoors. I’ve tried backdrops and studio work when I first started out and it’s just not my jam. I love moving around within the location. Soaking up the sounds, smells, and sights of nature and its natural elements. Being outside brings me joy, calmness, and nostalgia. Big shout out to my mum. If she didn’t nudge me to go outside and play, I doubt I would be here at this moment today.
The location we used for the G family photos is a favorite of mine. Not just because it’s close to my home, but also because Chase Farm has a lot going on with an easy parking lot to meet at. You can take a walkway up a hill to a water view, or enjoy a great view of the farm. There’s always beautiful light at golden hour amongst all the greenery and there’s even a butterfly farm! Chase Farm has a lot to work with which is great for outdoor family photos.
The little one arrived in tears, but I wasn’t worried. After getting started with some usual family photo poses, I always tell my families to have a tickle fight. This loosens them up, and soon you couldn’t even tell there were any tears at all. The girls ended up being very silly, and even stole my tickle stick from me! It’s so important to go with the flow. If kids are feeling silly… let them! It’s so fun to have silly photos in the mix. These are the moments you’ll want to remember.
Thank you to my friends Amanda & Jay for having me capture their gorgeous family again. I love seeing them and watching their girls grow. They are so similar in personality to my girls. Just feels like home.
